The webpage building is proving to be hard for me in more ways then one. I have someone coming over this sunday so that I can get things straight, hope to publish soon. So for now we will do it the old way.

The last ditch knife is proving to be a popular with people so I did another batch this time in 3V, stuff is super hard and very sharp. The Odd Jobs I am offering have been Dura Coated, here is some info on it Dura Coat it will wear on the high spots from the kydex sheath but overall it will protect the steel from any spot rusting issues commonly found in High carbon steels such as 1095.

This design has proven extremely popular in both function and price. I did another run in Crucible 3V, very hard tough steel that takes a keen edge and holds it. It can however be tough to sharpen so it's wise to keep the edge maintained at all times. I only have 3 recurves or hawkbills style blades in this run and 7 straight edge.

Just a quick update on current ops.

First off I have had to move to a new server and with that comes a robust E-commerce store/website, after nailing down all the tecno stuff I hope to have it up and running by Monday the 22nd.

I have been working towards a better approach to building the SAR Eclipse Signal Systems which is sucking up some time but the payoff will allow me more time to do other things.

If you have any pictures you would like to see of you and your SAR gear in action I will be creating a web-page dedicated to customer feedback, pictures etc. So send what you got it may get put up.

If you have any questions comments etc just drop me a email and I will do my best in these hectic times to respond.

Small Update 13JUL2011

Most of last week was spent working through a small Covert/Last ditch knife concept for Karl at OscarDelta SPD OscarDelta SPD. I made about 5 different designs, some will never see the light of day...lol.

This little knife is almost 1" tall and 5" long with about a 2 1/4" blade, I have not revealed all that is going on with this design until I have the time to work out some minor details. Also there is possibly some "trademark" work I will have to do to protect some of the design features. These should be available soon.

At the moment I am working through some 1911 TDT orders which was featured in "Tactical Knives" magazine September issue.

Here is a 59 second video I did last year showing the knife in operations.

I am working on a project with Karl from "Oscar Delta" Oscar Delta website, to build a very small last ditch knife. The knives below are from the first trial. Not a very easy task to build a knife that needs to be no bigger than 1" wide and no more than 3" long,. I will be building the next design this weekend and eventually we will find something that Karl really digs. Not to detract from the knives below, they are low key, light weight, fits in the hand, and extremely sharp. The sheath needs some work to enhance the signal qualities, I am sure a good solution will present itself.

The rest of the gear shown is always in stock and ready to ship. Working on the details of a true testimonie on the SESS in which it played a pivotal role in the rescue of a person who was evading some bad guys in a bad situation....stay tuned.

Great Morning on Vernon Lake

Same thing as last time put the kids on the bus, then we played hooky at Lake Vernon. Lake Vernon is a stump infested lake but the water is clean and it holds some really nice fish. Wind was already blowing a bit so we sought out some protected coves. First fish of the morning came up for a rubber frog, and Corbe caught the biggest fish on a super fluke about 2-3 pounds. We caught 5 fish and released them all, ducks where flying, blue herons and white cranes awesome day.

Coming back it was really windy with a 1 foot chop boat cut through the water nicely...we love this boat.

Maiden Voyage of the "Sand Raider"

Corbe and I took out the boat to the river that feeds Bundick lake which is about 20 minutes from the house. Fishing was extremely slow, but the cool wildlife all around was a bonus.

The boat is really nice, easy to load, maneuver, extremely stable and not too difficult to fish from.

Best part was Corbe and I getting to hang out together, this is or has always been our favorite thing to do. If anyone has any questions on the boat just ask and I will do my best to answer or get the answer for you.

Kayaks for a family of 4

We decided to spend the family vacation fund that we put money into monthly on some boats instead of going to disneyland.

So this is the beginning of some good times, today I took the kids and we drove a few hours to a really nice high end outdoor shop called Pack and Paddle. I have spoke on and off with a guy from the shop and USN member named Skip well to say the least I got squared away.

I purchased 2 Native Ultimate 14.5 tandem high bred kayaks, did a good amount of research on boats. Everything I read on this boat was all good the biggest draw-back is the weight which is not really that bad with both seats in it weighs 78 pounds. This boat can carry 450+ pounds of gear and its extremely stable many fish in the standing position in calm water with no problems.

I brought one home today and pick the other up on Friday, I will be building a nice rack for the toyota so we can haul them both. I have some work to get done but Corbe and I have recon-ed a cool spot for the first trip together then once we have the second boat the kids will be joining us.

I will get some video up and some fishing pictures end of the week., so more to follow

No longer stranded on weed filled banks its time to go get'em

I got the custom "SAR" edition...lol

I did a few improvements and would like to do more but I need some time in the boat to see how things are going to work. Eventually I would like to put in a fish-finder/GPS....

The parts supplied for the Scott rod holder sucked so I made a custom one from 1/4" textured G-10, it's pretty bomber now.

Picked up some 1/4" horse stall high impact rubber and built some movable/removable floor mats, they will dampen sound and protect our fishing reels other gear etc.

Corbe and I will be taking "The Sand-Raider"? on its maiden voyage tomorrow. We will be exploring/fishing the headwaters/bayou of Bundick Lake which is about 20 minutes from the house and looks extremely inviting

"Inglorious Bastard"

A large utility/fighter made from a Nicholson "Bastard" cut file, from the good old days when they made them in the USA.

The Hamon is not by any design, it occurred during heat treat. Adding some beauty to the used rough looking basterd file.

This design was inspired by a World War I book that is part fiction part fact? When the "Bayonet" was as important as your "Rifle", part of the daily weapons maintence was putting a keen edge on.

I thought of calling it the "DoughBoy Delight"?

Sorry for the lack of posting, its always hard to balance all the different operations. I have spent some time with the Louisiana economic development working on a business plan, streamlining operations and working towards hiring a employee. When I get ready to hire I will be looking for a US Veteran.

I have been building up my stocks on items such as combs, mirrors and other various things. I did take some time to work on my first knife I ever built from a file. I had always heard from many many people "Files make great knives" they where correct. I fully annealed ( softened ) the blade first then profiled, and partially ground the bevels. I re-hardened the blade then finished it out to a nice 400 grit satin finish with a simple cord wrap. I think this one will go on my belt and maybe I will get to use it on a pig or a deer if I get lucky this year.

The DVM/US Military Contractor Knife Project

Hey everyone,

I had a post up here about day 1 of a work in progress I did with James Grey of "Death Valley Magazine" DVM home page . We have worked together for the last few months on a knife design, I decided to do a very involved "work in progress" which through comment, photography and video I was able to show almost every major step of the design, construction and finishing of the knife. It made the overall time line of completion much longer, but in the end I think it served its purpose to educate people on what goes into custom tool/knife making. No magic, no mystery heat treat formula, no baying at the moon etc, just a systematic approach with some good old elbow grease and the desire to build the best knife possible.

I like to use the term "What you see is what you get" or "It is what it is", its really that simple. Trying to build the "one knife that does it all" is impossible so "What you see is what you". The knife however is a sound design, solid construction, with nice form, and back by "Me" because it has my name stamp on it.

I am working with James to build a run of limited numbers, and will certainly let anyone know who is interested in this knife the opportunity to purchase one. The feedback has been great, I know there are just as many folks that don't like the design but I have learned its very hard to please everyone!

Instead of me re posting the "WIP" here which would be very time consuming, I will just direct you over to DVM. DVM is a great place with a very knowledgeable, talented, group or writers that base there articles off of real time deployments, current professions, etc. The "Dark Humor" associated with all the articles helps drive the point home a tad bit better than other place's in my opinion and that one reason why I look forward to the funny ass picture, the comedy and short content every 24 hrs.

The addition of a titanium/carbidize edged tool ( Not Standard on all eclipses ) to the SAR Eclipse Signal Device, takes it to another level of a really good "last Ditch" item that would be great to have when the chips are down or you forget your knife and need to do some light duty cutting of cord, open a box or need to make some distance? The cord, knot and finger groove all play a key part as yo can tell from the "In the hand picture". The groove gives you some index and the knot acts as a light duty stop to keep the blade from rotating up...works pretty good.

PBK for Halloween and the PBK-R ( Runt )

I decided to do a PBK with handle material, I had a choice between yellow and orange...the decision was easy Halloween=orange.

The pry tool detail with handle material worked out pretty good, still functions. Also did up the last of the prototypes, I am pretty happy with the way it performs so I will go forward with more.

All have a 3' wrap of Kevlar thread which is 5 times stronger than steel line
Zero stretch braided cord.

The "PBK-R" ( Runt ) will be a cool little back pocket blade, very sheeple friendly.
6" over all length with a pointy 2" blade

A quick update

Just wanted to mention that everything other than a few items from the September gear sale is sold out. I will get some stuff up here today or tomorrow. I have a faster way to manufacturer my Signal gear so expect a nice little price drop...if I can build it faster and maintain the same quality I can charge less..right.

We spent the weekend up at a state park called "Hodges Garden" Website, we rented a cabin which sits on the lake. The kids had a blast running around the woods, kayaking, and fishing. I was stalking some monster carp with a spear I fashioned from a bamboo grove. I was unable to get as close for a clean shot...next time I will do it just a bit different...these carp are over 3-4' long....huge fish. Anyways we had a good time, also had a chance to test my new knife the PBK ( pack and boat knife ) it does really well in almost all areas except chopping it's to be expected with this design...has to be some tradeoff for the light weight.

Pack and Boat knife

Nothing special a real minimalist approach to mans oldest tool. Good utility blade for backpacking, kayak fishing, and survivalist needs. Not to big not to small, not to thick and not so thin etc etc lots of compromise. It should do well for many application.
I made five in CPM 154 and one in 6LA4V ti
.125"x7.5" OAL with a 3.5" blade
HRc 59-60 on the cpm 154 and the ti has a carbidized enhanced edge
Low viz, low maintenance SAR tumble finish
Handle is drilled out balance point is dead center

Handle wrap is 2 part.
first layer is approximately 3" .038" "Kevlar Thread— Has a breaking strength five times greater than steel wire. It also has excellent heat and flame resistance. Meets MIL-T-87128. Maximum temperature is 400° F. Color is yellow"
Under the Kevlar thread is 1 small 1 large stainless steel fishing hooks.
Over wrap is approximately 3' of 5/32" braided nylon that has zero stretch, very durable and made for the commercial fishing industry used as rigging line.
Butt end has a small pry/flat screwdriver.

I still have a few things to add to the sheath..fire starter, signal, pace and small compass via a SAR O'rig. We will be taking the kids camping this weekend and I plan to use the shit out of a few of these...tell ya how it goes next week.

I was presented with a great deal on a rifle that I have been wanting for a long long time. Finally got a AK, a polish made AK-74 which shoots the lighter, faster, 5.45x39mm. Anyways I leave tomorrow for my journey back home with a few stops along the way. Really cannot wait to put this thing through the paces, I have a Aimpoint Comp M4 that will get mounted up soon.

I will say that Matt teaches a course that will let you leave with a new skill, skills and mind set that can be applied in all aspects of shooting/defense.

Quick little video of the last day, breaking contact from a vehicle in buddy teams with multiple threats....awesome stuff. Also some footage of shooting through the front windows...would I have done it had I not trained for it nope, but you can bet your ass if I have a threat to my front and no choice but to engage through the window...hey no problem now..I know the end results and consideration of what needs to happen. This and many other aspects of basic shooting, maneuvers and combat mindset taught by Matt set the condition for a great block of instruction....Thanks Matt

Got my car packed and ready to head out in the early morning for my first leg to Culpeper, VA for a combat shooting course with Matt Graham of http://www.grahamcombat.com/ . Should be a fun filled weekend, Corbe cut me some major slack and said to take my time coming home and visit with a few friends.

I will update the blog with some video and pictures of my trip. I managed to finish up a few knives before the trip. Some SAR 1911 TDT's ( Take down Tool ) and a new very simple fixed blade design that is light, tough and very useful imo.

I rigged up the spearpoint to my chest rig and plan to use the shit out of it on my trip, I will be camping or staying with friends along the way instead of staying at any hotels so it should be a good time.

112 pounds of tags...WTF!

I just received 3/4 of my full order of 15,000 dog tags, that translate into 5,000 SAR Eclipse signal systems. I patiently waiting for a few sets of modified dies that a friend has been working on this last month, this will speed the process up considerably. I have spent some time working on a press with a dual head cutters that cuts the stickers inside and outside diameter in one shot, which is light years ahead of my current method. All this will groundwork has been done to set the condition to crank these tags out fast. I will be pushing to finish the first 5,000 by November 1st, and ready for the next round.

I have came in contact David Reeder who has leaned forward in the foxhole and committed to helping me develop a small field manual for the "SESS". I could have done it myself but David is a writer for several Tactical blogs and H2 Harris publication and will be able to add a professional touch that I will certainly lack...thanks for the offer and the help David. This has proven to be a missing link in the quest to getting the tag recognized for what it is and what it can do.

For the last year this project has really been a ride so far I have learned so much from the development, testing, patent/trademark, methods of manufacturing, and marketing that I feel it has become a pivotable point in my knife and toolmaking career. It's been a lot of work, sacrifice, networking etc but if this device is credited with saving just one life it will all be extremely well worth it.

Last thing, I had a free Tattoo due from a buddy/artist at "Year of the Monkey" tattoo, I new what I wanted just had to think about it for some time and make sure it was the right thing. I have a large Compass tattooed on the left side of my chest, the compass has been in my family for as long as I can remember and it hold some special meaning to me. The Eclipse has that same effect for the reasons I listed above so it seemed a natural fit on the right side...That's one way to stand behind your work!

Seriously, why does it always feel like I am "Mach 5 with my hair on fire" maybe I have the "winchester mystery house illness" you know how his wife always built something daily or she thought she would die.

Lots of moving parts lately, but I have to stop turn off the electronics and get busy. Loaded the folder tray with a batch of 1911 TDT and prototyping a new utility blade called the "PBK" but you can't see that shit yet..lol

I have been waiting on 15,000 dog tags to get here yep that's no typo 15K, probably get some kind of heavy metal poising after playing with that much steel.

The main reason to get things rolling in the shop is the spiders are taking over...found a few fat black widows a dead mouse who died from snorting carbon fiber or playing with the anodizer...lol

A Match Made In Vegas

After roughly 4.5 years in the trade as a custom knife/tool maker I finally have a dealer not just any dealer a great dealer "Plaza Cutlery" is like a "institution" in the knife world. Dan's father started it all back in 1948, and in 1974 his mother established the brick and mortar store that they still operate from to this day. In my book it does not get any better than that. I have a few reasons for wanting a dealer like Dan, the knife market is very, very demanding and can be quite unforgiving for the maker that does not know where he fits in the grand scheme of things. The Private Range

Having access to a private range on private property makes all the difference in my book. I got tired of going to the local range paying money and being subjected to the standard range bullshit...please no offense to anyone but I came to shoot not bullshit about my rifle or your rifle or the loads or the weather just want to concentrate on improving my capabilities.

The other thing is organized ranges are often static and I understand why they have to be that way...people do get shot from time to time and that's bad. We are still running a safe range but with only ourselves to worry about it translates into a learning experience vs just training in accuracy?

I have been going out for the last 2-3 months and getting some solid time behind my 2 weapon systems, things are really starting to click again. I recently acquired a ACOG RCO, not that anything was wrong with my Aimpoint comp M2 just wanted to zero and see what the ACOG had to offer. I found that I like it just a tad more than the comp, I also tried out the new ACOG reflex sight and found the thing was really nice.

Today my buddy called targets and shot pictures which I was able to review later to help identify some things I felt I was doing wrong and now that I could see it helps me in the long run fix those problems.

Anyways here are a few shots from today's range time, if you have any range shots feel free to post them up as well, I am always interested to see who, what , when, where and why when it comes to shooting.

The USN Gathering in Las Vegas

I apologize for not updating the blog things got a bit busy before attending the 2010 "USN Gathering" in Las Vegas over the labor day weekend.

Having missed the Blade show in Atlanta due to a shop remodel and hand surgery I was really pumped up to have a good time and attempt to put some nice work on the table. I got started around the first week in July, working roughly everyday in the shop from sun up to sun down and it did pay off.

I took a bunch of combs hands down they where my biggest selling item. They are being considered for production.

This knife was the first to go to a collector of SAR tools, 10:00 show opened 10:01 this knife was sold wish I would have built more.

With over 500 items built for the show...my table looked full up to the end. Folks really dug the set-up as well. It took on a Indiana Jones look.

After the show we took a day out to show the kids the Grand Canyon and had a great time.

Having had time to regroup I am ready to get back into the shop, I have some important dates coming up. SAR G.T. will be attending a few days of "Tactical Tracking school" with John Hurth of TYR' Group in the Kisatchie National forest. John was up for the weekend so we could meet and talk life, business etc, so the best way to do that was go shooting at a good buddies private range. That evening we had a small party with good friends, good food/drink and just a good time. Another friend has asked me to attend Tom Browns tracking school as well this winter?

Munukis are hand crafted from titanium, I understand what side the munukis are supposed to go on which is the show side or the friendly side. Well you said they are friendly sea creatures.

The stix holder/slash plates one is bamboo and the other 2 are red palm wood.

The drop leg rigs are silky smooth felt lined, with scuba webbing nylon, good buckles and plates are on with the "SAR O'Rig" rubber o'ring system. The chopstix are slipped in between the backplate and sheath with the rudder o'ring providing pressure.

They are nice, long and sexy

SAR MEe prototyping

I spent some time prototyping the next evolution of the Mirco eclipse which is the smallest of the SAR Eclipse signal device series.

I am in the process of refining the all steel version and switching to a 316L stainless steel. 316L ss is really great stuff highly corrosion resistant and it takes the best of the best polish ( a true glassy mirror ) and touch up by the end user is easy.

Worked on this project yesterday, I wanted to create a Micro that was both functional and intriguing to look at. By using the right materials to ensure it can withstand years and years of hard use and still come back looking great or even better over time was a huge consideration in this process. For me it needed to be consistent, easy to make and have as few steps as possible.

With that being said I took two different approaches and came up with about the same design. The first one was time consuming to design, intensive to build and would require making some jigs. The second design used the same materials but by adding something as simple as a kydex rivet eliminated many steps and more thing to go wrong for me and the end user. In my book any time you can do more with less and still achieve the results both functionally and in form you are a winner.

The first one is cool looking beyond a doubt but for the time it takes to make one with no fuck ups compared to the second one is night and day. So please do not ask me to build one unless you are willing to compensate me for my time....maybe at a later date when things settle down I may build a few...but for now the answer is no.

SAR Eclipse "Micros" in macro

The smallest and by far the coolest of the SAR Eclipse Signal System. These could really be considered jewelry with a purpose. They have a fine near perfect mirror polish with the rough edge is a great contrast. Not mention a nice solid heft, its one of those items you cannot put down once you pick it up. Corbe made one with some findings she had 5 complete strangers thoughout the day ask her were she got it and said they thought it looked cool and unique.

Just finished this 1095 S/E (survive/escape) utility knife.

New feature on the Stainless Steel ID Tag Eclipse

Had a idea and the means so I ran with it, it went togther like bread&butter. They are small SS pocket clips made for knives, I modified the holes to a single hole for the rivet, bead blast and tumble. It adds a new dimension to the device, now it can be worn around the neck, clipped to your gear, hold your money, clean your finger nails. The best use would be if I was going out fishing or hunting and wanted something to orient me back to my campsite, vehicle or link up point. I took some pictures of one hooked on my door window of my truck, and both day and night on a trail behind the house on the back 40.

Just a note the inside face on bottom tag is mirror polished and tested to 15 kilometers or 9 miles during daytime use.

SAR 1911 TDT ( Take Down Tool ) fast work in progress! Pic and video 18JUL10

I had a order for a 1911 TDT frame lock folder, it arrived on my plate at the last minute, which means the person needed it yesterday..lol. So after getting to a happy place with the 1095 S/E's, I cleaned up the shop for a early morning start on these 2 folders...yep when you have a order with a short deadline I always will build 2 so just in case "Mr Murphy" shows up I have a better chance at success. This is my first frame lock design I ever did. It all started when a good friend and customer Keith K called me in the shop. He said "hey I was just at the range and needed my 1911 bushing wrench but as usual I forgot it at home". So he asked me to build a knife with a wrench in the handle charge him a large amount of money to ensure he never forgot it or misplaced it....true story....lol.

So I got busy designing my initial thought was to make a BAT knife ( Bird and Tactical ) which is a fixed blade with a krambit style ring hole and change it to a bushing cutout. Thinking about the dangers of working with a exposed edge fixed blade while trying to remove the bushing pushed me towards a folder design. I had lots of help from Marianne and Les from Halpern Titanium Inc. http://www.halperntitanium.com/ which ultimately and with expert knowledge made all my parts at their awesome facility in Three rivers, Ma. Check out there link above as they are the go to folks for many knife makers seeking precision machining on the highest level. They also carry a full line of clean 6LA4V titanium, all sorts of G10, carbon fiber and super nice hardware for all your knife making needs.

My help in graphics and design came from my good friends Brian M. and Curt W. these guys know there stuff. This would have never happen with out the help of these two.

I also received some help from a really great Knife maker initials MS, he not only gave me permission to use a design aspect of his but allowed me into his shop to advise and helped me construct the first one.

Here are the down and dirty with some steps missing on the SAR 1911 TDT numbers 34 and 35 to leave my shop. One of the knives you will be seeing again I hope.

Hey folks I got behind on posting so a few updates will be posted to day of work in the last few days. First off I finished my 1095 S/E's in top shelf desert ironwood. I think they came out pretty nice considering I have not played with high carbon steel in some time, it can be fairly tricky to get everything flat and straight.

I also built a test SAR firewalker in ironwood, its a great piece with a little bit of "sapwood" on one side. The pace counter in premium grade kangaroo leather on a cowhide thong. The last thing to be attached and I am waiting for to arrive is a "Marbles" brass pocket compass. I have 2 more 1095's to build and when they are done I will outfit them all in a drop leg rig.

Light at the end of the tunnel

It seems I have been at these 2 knives forever. I started where I left last night off hand rubbing the blades to 600 grit. Much easier in the nice early morning light.

Got a real nice satin finish and ready for etch again..it will look good this time for sure.

I end up having to re-do the small blade because the etch was a little jacked up, so it had to be hand rubbed out again...and that sucked. But here they are and I am pretty happy with the results at this point.

Doing this type of work you really go through a lots of towels, sandpaper, sweat and I am sure my hands will be screaming sore tomorrow.

Here is the proto-type of the "Mr Fancy Pants" fire SAR Firewalker in desert iron wood, I am waiting for my small pocket compass's to come in. They are Marbles in brass and should look really great.

Now you are probably wondering where the pictures of the knives are right, well technically they are not done yet because I still have to build the drop leg sheath rigs. I suppose I could share a few pictures but you will have to wait because I have got do battle with my fast growing lawn. So later tonight I will throw up some quick pictures I took and they really are nothing fancy.

One of those long hot ass days

Really tried to get down today, but things seemed to get tough, one set of handles did some funky maneuvers after roughing out the palm swell and world not lay flat. No matter what I tried, really frustrating to be cursing along and hit a brick wall. I made a little modification to the one set and moved on to my second trail of the day.

The first pair went down like clockwork..but that second set to the right...well I had a few four letter words flying around the shop today.

After both sets where done I got the blades ready for a little stonewashed action, here they are blasted and ready to go in the tumbler

Almost my favorite finishing machine I have..everything seems to get tumbled around here.

After tumble I got my etching station ready to roll. Ferric chloride is the kind of stuff you use outdoors away from all you metal stuff in the shop. This stuff will rust everything you have if exposed for too long.

After the first dunk I decided to change the blade finish from a 400 grit satin, stonewashed. It did not do the knife any justice. I mean it looks okay but could be better.

I decided to take the long way and hand rub the blades to a 600 grit satin finish. So tomorrow we will see how these 2 finish up. Then I have some other stuff to get going on asap.

After I spent some time fitting the handles I decided to change to a different fastener. The ones I show are pretty nice and from a very limited stash.

Down and dirty Update

Just finished getting the bevels done, took them to 400 grit and then a extra fine scotch brite satin finish. The Hamon will really show through now.

I have the handles ready to drill, rough out etc , hopefully I will be done with these 2 for the most part. I am going shopping for some old buckles at a few antique stores to use in the drop leg sheath build coming up.

I also heat treated the Micro eclipse's. They are ready for surface grinding and polishing

Friday I got the 4 of 5 knives through heat treat, although they proved to be a pain in the ass well they are done and looking good.

I decided to profile one into a re curve, if you look you can see where the clay was. That area is softer than the edge once they finish out you will see it really pop out when the knives are dipped into "Ferric Chloride". A etching process will take place the difference in hardness will provide a visual contrast that hopefully will look real cool.

I selected some really top shelf handle material which will be exhibition grade desert iron wood with red liners

1095 S/E's

This is a follow up to a earlier post called "Things are heating up". I had a few issues with this bar of 1095, lots of movement through all phase's of pre heat treat. So today I took the knives through some cycle's of "Normalizing" which relieves stress built by drilling, grinding and yelling at it..lol. Throughout the process of grinding the bevels I had to go back and recheck for straightness.

I was able to work it all out...here is a picture of the grinding process at 220 grit finish

After the grinding I put the blades in for another normalizing cycle while that was ongoing I got my "satinite" refractory cement mixed up. Here are a few shots of the clay after application...will it be a "Picasso" or a "Wall-Mart poster".

Here is a quick shot of the first two after heat treat and a snap quench. It will all make sense later on in the build.

I am going to the movies tomorrow with the wife and kids, so I will get back on it Monday. We will see how they start to come together?

Introducing the SAR O'rig

I have something pretty cool to share this morning. A long standing question in regards to making a "Kydex" sheaths without "Metal rivets" to secure a knife may be answered right here.

Why would this all matter, well if you are trying to make a truly "Non Metal defensive tool" that cannot be picked up by metal detectors it seems the hang up has always been how to secure the kydex sheath, carrier etc without the use of metal kydex rivets. All the other methods folding it over, making little securing tabs, or tying it together with 550 cord etc they all lack some flexibility.

I recently built a knife called the CPMD2 S/E the kydex sheath has a Fire starter which is held in place by 2 single rubber O'rings. I had a conversation with a good friend Dan Clark and he brought to my attention what I could really achieve with the use of the O'rings and a G10 knife. A really clean, secure non metal detectable knife. Here is a picture of the fire starter secured by the rubber O'rings.

Yesterday I decided to build 7 of my small SARclops utility knives in a variety of G10. I then proceeded to build the sheaths using the O'ring technique. Dam if it did not work out extremely slick, great retention, nice little snap when the knife is inserted=sucess all the way around. A added bonus in keeping things simple the O'rings double as securing point or can simply be slid onto any belt up to a rigger style. So here are some pictures of what I will dub the SAR O'rig featuring a G10 SARclops non metal knife.

The SARclops knife ( first time in G10 ) itself is a very formidable defensive tool. It is more than capable of inflicting heavy damage to a attacker. It can slash, really just simple heavy pressure on the wrist of someone can bring them to there knee's. Now the blade edge with damage if used improperly cutting something very hard will roll the edge or chip it, heavy prying could snap the knife. I guess it is what it is.

G10 SARclops in 6 different blade styles, all are ground down to a very thin 0 degree edge.

As with anything I am not saying this is the last word in non metal sheath construction, it is merly a sound tecnique I am suggesting. Try it out, work to improve it etc and let me know what you think?

Things are "Heating up"

Today is the day that as a knife maker I will perform the most important step in the knife making process which is Heat treating the steel. 1095 although referred to as a simple steel is anything but simple. Consistent temperature, a quench oil that is fast, and a fast hand getting it to the quench oil.

I have a few more details to address before HT like counter boring the holes, clean up the mill scale and filing the thumb ramp.

Should make things really hot in the shop all fans with be on warp drive. Here is the HT station prepped and ready to get HOT!

Here is a shot of the five 1095 S/E blades but the real reason is to provide a small clue to the next project. When I built Paris's knife I stumbled onto a really cool idea that involves a SARclops, G10, kydex and O'rings. If it comes together it should provide a very clean and functional NMDK?....haha

Also I finally figured out the comments if you should leave one it seems to take some time to get posted in the blog system.

"In The shop today" 06JUL10

I am working on a few more CPMD2 S/E's except the steel of choice is going to be high carbon 1095. Although a relatively inexpensive steel 1095 has so much to offer. When heat treated properly 1095 can really come through as a dependable knife with a great edge which is easy to maintain in the field. The one and only downside is it will rust up quick. I have begun to cut and shape 5 blades 3 are 5+ inches and 2 are 4".

I will be doing a process called "differential hardening" its the process in where you use a "santanite refractory" cement/clay. When place along the upper sides and spine of knife it acts as a insulator during the heat treat process. When the knife is brought up to optimized heat then quenched in oil, the clay absorbs or retards the cooling cycle and you end up with a "temper line the bottom edge (cutting ) is very hard and the back or spine is slightly softer. It will also produce what is called a Hamon pronounced ( Ha mon ) which can be called functional art. More to follow.

SAR CPMD2 S/E #002 done with some changes

Today I had the chance to wear Paris's knife CPMD2 S/E 001 found out some changes really needed to happen on his and the second drop leg rig.

The things I needed to change
1 The sheath flopped around during movement, extraction and insertion
2 The leg strap was really too narrow and it did not adjust or fasten well.
3 The Fire-Walker was missing something and a bit too narrow, it need just a bit more meat around it and some color.
4 From my experience in the Infantry/ski patrolling anything that can rub you wrong during long patrols, forced marches and rescues etc will really piss a guy off. The back of the sheath had a few hard spots=Hot spots=pain for the end user.

I was happy with number one but not satisfied. The specs are the same as #001 except this one is 3/4" shorter in the blade length.
So spent about 8 hours looking to simplify the whole drop leg and come away looking clean? I will re-rig Paris's knife with these chnages as well.

I finished this order for a close friends son, I have known Paris (12) since he was born really great kid. It is a real honor to build his first custom knife, my only regret is I won't be able to give it to him in person.

He is a member of a wilderness survival group in San Francisco his Dad said they spend a great amount of time honing there craft in the vast coastal forest.

This is a modified design from my CPMD2 DP ( drop point ) model. Extended the blade 3/4" added a little more belly, a deeper finger grove and some file work for extra grip/indexing.

Part III of Paris's knife

It was one of those days, I was really getting my ass kicked in the shop. I spent at least an hour looking for something I knew I had but not where I had put it...lol I found lots of other stuff.

My goal today was to finish the knife, design and build a fire starter with a lanyard, a simple drop leg rig/sheath, also integrate the fire starter into the sheath and make it all look super clean.

The knife or knives's they finished up real nice I think I was done with them around 11:00.Here they are ready to go into the tumbler for a stonewashed smooth finish.

So I got started on the lanyard which is actually a 5000 meter pace count keeper, I used one similar when I was in the Infantry. The long portion has nine black tabs, every time you pace off a 100 meters you slide one down. When you reach your first 1000 meters you slide all the bottom ones back to the top and pull down one of the the top 5 repeat, drink water repeat lol. I put a SAR Micro reflector pull tab with SOLAS tape on the bottom to finish it off.

Next up was to get started on the "Fire starter" commonly referred to as a "Fire Steel". This is where the big search started, it took well over an hour of ripping my shop apart to find these little "Ferroceium rods". Once found I went to work with my totally on the fly idea. I decided to use the small rods and some scrap F22 Raptor stealth fighter carbon fiber, this stuff is some bad to work with, once touched to the grinder I am committed to wearing my respirator for most of the day. The dust is fine, very light and nasty to breathe I try to work it wet. Here is a starter which is almost done. To use this you just hold the cf handle and using the back edge of your knife you sharply strike the rod and it will produce good sparks that in turn will catch dry tinder on fire.

Believe it or not at this point I have been in the shop since 7:00 its know around 4:00 and I have not even started on the sheaths, which I have not really settled on how I am going to make the drop thigh rig....well more "On the Fly Design" lol. I was not happy with the direction or retention on the first sheath...it looked good but was a bit to snug..shit happens in the trash bin.

Sheath 3 we are cooking ready to move on. How to attach the fire steel, this really killed me for some time. My answer was rubber O rings....off the the hardware store F*&k. Got back and some more OTFD (on the fly design) and we had some clean integration. Completed Fire starter with a almost completed sheath.

Now I started brainstorming how to drop the sheath onto the thigh. I liberated some 1" black flat nylon from one of my surfboard/gear tie down straps, found a ladder buckle. Measured, punch holes applied rivets and did the attachment with Chicago screws same stuff you use for "teck loks". When I made the sheath I place a single strand of 550 cord through the bottom for use as a simple adjustable leg strap. Around 12 plus hours my mission was almost complete.

I have since made the lanyard for the knife, got the leg strap working, etched my logo and put a smoking edge on some nice and toothy CPM D2. I am pretty pleased with the way this turned out, I will take the finished pictures in the early morning light when the light is flat and good pictures can be had.

Yesterday I got started on a order that is special to me for a close friend of 20+ years John. He ordered a knife for his son Paris who happens to be a squared away 12 year old.

After discussing some options and what he might use it for we settled on one of my mainstay models the CPMD2 DP except I made his a CPMD2 DPM the "M" stands for Modified. The CPMD2 stands for "Crucible Particle Metallurgy" it is some of the hardest and best edge holding steel on the market today, not quite a stainless steel but it does have a degree of rust Resistance built in ( I prefer my personal knives to made in this steel ).

The handle will be coarse texture black carbon fiber which is top shelf, tough and very good looking material. I will also be building a fire starter and integrating it into the sheath. Paris is a member of a wilderness group in the San Francisco area and they get cut loose to go adventure in the vast coastal wood of the west coast.

I wish I could be there to see his reaction when he gets his knife which I know he will treasure for life. With his first real knife being a custom makes me feel good in that a future knife connesuir is born, which in turn will keep the whole cycle alive.

More to follow later, the knife or knives are in the oven getting there second temper and will be ready to grind out later this morning.

The SAR Eclipse Signal System has proven to be a winner. The tri-angle and SS Dog tag have been effectively tested and used by Private Security Contractors in South Africa and other areas of operation around the world. The farthest signal thus far has been 15 Kilometers or 9 miles. The Tri-Angle and SS Dog tag are in use by the Redmond Oregon Smoke-Jumper Hotshot crews during wild land fire fighting for directing both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft delivering fire retardant, supplies and crew evacuation. This is currently ongoing in wild land fire operations around the entire United States. It is also implemented in gear selection by Master rated divers, Instructors and guides in the Florida Keys diving area.

For the Tri-angle mirror I am currently using 6LA4V Military Spec Titanium, that has a like mirror polish very effective and very light and will not rust in saltwater environments making it a good choice if you will be around saltwater.

The cover is constructed with high visibility "blaze" orange or low key black coarse textured G-10 which is a high impact glass/resin based material. It is resistant to all foreign materials.

The Dog tag version is constructed from 2 USGS Identification tags which are made from high grade stainless steel and very high resistance's to rusting. The mirror tag portion is also almost like mirror polish and very effective.

The Rivit that holds the devices together is a black coated brass and will not rust and I have had no problems with terminal failure when used properly.

The reflective tape applied to these signal device's for night recognition is the best stuff on the current market period.

The White with the honey-comb grid is called SOLAS "Safety Of Life At Sea". USGS approved and rated at 900 candle power reflect ability for night time operations.It also has DAYBRIGHT capabilities.

The Green and Orange with a honey-comb grid is HIGH INTENSITY TYPE III tape. Rated at 250 candle power reflect ability for night time operations also has DAYBRIGHT capabilities.

These devices make great pull tabs on jackets, backpacks and used as a key chain is nice when you misplace your keys. A great tool or gift for anyone that ventures into the Outdoors.

Below is a series of Hair combs I have been making for the last year. They work very well on the hair, beard and moustache. They also can be employed in a defensive manner. The 3/4" tines are very rugged, stiff and pointy but not sharp. I have flown with my comb and cruise through all security checkpoints so far.

Natural micarta with F22 stealth CF for rear pommel swell.
Textured and stonewashed.

Combs on the way to Blade Art

Just gonna follow up my last post.

I have finished one batch of my combs, if you are interested you can purchase from www.bladeart.com or you can contact me.

The both combs are really stout....and quite capable of being used in a defensive mode.

Also here is a nice review I found on You Tube about the collaboration between Dietmar Pohl of Pohl Force Knives and SAR Global tool.

Why is it always hard to start something new?

My webmaster and good friend suggested that I try a "Blog" site to help display and describe what goes on at SAR Global Tool. So after my usual procrastination here we go.

At the moment I have a few things going on and as always something developing or "In the works". Here is a quick bench shot of some tools, knives, and toys in progress, if you notice the square, pad and pencil its something new in its Beginning stages of design.

Currently the main focus is a large batch of Tactical Titanium hair combs, Hope to be done with these today so I can move on to some other stuff that needs attention.

Okay I will stop back later to post some pictures of combs, and also some shop shots here is one from yesterday standing at the grinder.
